Benefits of Physical Therapy for Seniors

Physical therapy is a well-known way to treat injuries and certain illnesses. What is less well-known, though, is how valuable physical therapy can be in treating the symptoms of aging. Some seniors come to physical therapy after a fall, while others are interested in increasing their flexibility, coordination, endurance, and strength. Regardless of your reason for seeking therapy, though, research consistently shows that physical therapy can be an important tool in the quest to age gracefully and without pain.

Conditions Physical Therapy Can Treat

Physical therapy can help treat numerous conditions that are often thought of as signs of aging. These include, but are not limited to:

  •         Arthritis
  •         Osteoporosis
  •         Cancer pain
  •         Incontinence
  •         Strokes
  •         Parkinson’s disease
  •         Dementia
  •         Balance issues
  •         Hip fracture or replacement
  •         Amputations
  •         Joint pain

Goals of Physical Therapy

The goals of physical therapy are as unique as the patients, regardless of age. One senior may be looking for ways to enjoy her grandchildren with less pain, while another is healing a sports injury, and yet another is training for a marathon. At your first visit, your physical therapist will not only conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your current condition, but will also sit down with you to discuss your current activity level and goals for treatment. You will receive a detailed treatment plan complete with short-term, mid-range, and long-term goals. A reassessment every 30 days will help us track your progress and tweak your treatment plan as needed.

Physical Therapy Techniques

The core of physical therapy is targeted exercise performed both in the office and at home. In addition, we may use a wide variety of complementary techniques, including but not limited to:

  •         Manual therapy
  • Exercise Prescription Programming
  •         Massage / Myofascial Release / Joint Mobilization / Joint Manipulation
  •         Ice and/or heat
  •         Electrical stimulation

The techniques we choose are based on your unique needs and goals. It is common for them to evolve and change as you progress through treatment.

Role of Family and Friends

Family members and friends can be an extremely valuable part of anyone’s journey through physical therapy. However, many seniors face issues and concerns that are not common among younger people, including worries about the loss of mobility and independence.

Some family members react by overprotecting their loved one, hastening a loss of independence and building resentment. Others become directorial, nagging and insisting that their loved one progress in a certain way. Both reactions are understandable but unhelpful. You can support your loved one best by checking in regularly, encouraging rather than nagging, and remaining realistic. Keep the lines of communication open and work hard to be a member of the team.

Both seniors and loved ones should keep in mind that physical therapy is a journey, and progress rarely moves in a perfectly straight line. Remaining flexible and maintaining a good sense of humor can help keep the journey fun and productive rather than frustrating and demeaning.
